Half of all the world’s plastic goes into single-use items, designed to be disposable and thrown away or recycled after just one use. The amount of plastic that is recycled is estimated to be around just 5%. Most of it ends up in landfill or in our oceans, beaches and streets. Plastic uses precious fossil fuels when it’s created; it harms our environment and devastates our marine life when it’s thrown away.
Virtually every piece of plastic that was ever made still exists in some shape or form.
TalkPlastic is a Melbourne-based project designed to change our attitudes towards plastic use and plastic waste. Its aim is to be a fun, collaborative and inspiring challenge that opens up the opportunity to talk, as well as think and act.
With the help of our participants, TalkPlastic will compile and publish a guide to alternative items to single-use plastic. By sharing this practical resource, we hope to make it that little bit easier for people to live in a more caring and environmentally conscious way.
